What Age Can Kids Start Fencing in Singapore?

Wondering when your child can begin fencing? Here's the honest answer on starting ages, what to expect at each stage, and how to know if your child is ready.

One of the most common questions we get from parents is simple: “How young is too young to start fencing?” The short answer: most children can begin around age 3 for private lessons, with group classes from age 7 once a child is ready. But age is only part of the story.

The right age by program

Every child develops differently, so we look at readiness, not just the number on a birthday cake:

  • Ages 3 to 6 (private only): Short, play-based sessions focused on coordination, listening, and having fun with a blade in hand.
  • Ages 7 to 12 (Youth Academy): Our sweet spot. Kids have the focus for group classes and soak up technique fast.
  • Teens & adults: It’s never too late, and many of our competitive fencers started in secondary school.

Fencing rewards focus and patience over raw athleticism. A thoughtful seven-year-old often progresses faster than a distracted ten-year-old.

What a first lesson actually looks like

A beginner’s first session starts with footwork and games rather than sparring. Children learn to move before they learn to hit, which is both safer and, it turns out, the faster way to get good.

No prior experience is needed, and we provide all the equipment, mask, jacket and blade, so you don’t need to buy anything to try.

How to know if your child is ready

Ask yourself:

  1. Can they follow a few simple instructions in a row?
  2. Can they stay engaged in an activity for 20 to 30 minutes?
  3. Are they curious about the sport?

If you answered yes to two of those, they’re ready to try. If you’re not sure, that’s exactly what a trial session is for.

Ready to find out?

The best way to know if your child will love fencing is to let them try. Book a trial session and one of our coaches will assess where they fit and what program suits them best.
