Fencing Trial Class in Singapore
A fencing trial at Fencing Masters costs S$55 and takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. You spend 30 minutes with a coach, learning the en garde stance, footwork and the lunge, then stay for the class that follows. It all happens at our salle at 177 Ubi Avenue 4 #02-00, in Ubi, and you do not need any experience or protective gear.
What happens at the trial
The Trial & Assessment has two parts, one after the other.
- 30 minutes with a coach. This slot is held just before a class session. The first 15 minutes or so are an introduction to the sport and a little admin. Then the coach teaches you the en garde stance, footwork and the lunge, and at the end suggests which class suits you.
- The class itself, about 2 hours. You stay on and warm up with the fencers, follow the drills you can, and watch the bouts up close. You can also talk to the fencers.
That makes about 2 hours 30 minutes in all. Bouts are fenced by members in their own full kit, so a trial is your chance to see how they work from close range before you decide.
What to wear
Wear sports clothes, loose long trousers (no yoga pants or tight leggings) and closed sports shoes. No experience is needed and you do not need any protective gear for the trial. The club's loan gear is for your first lessons after you join: we lend you the mask, jacket and blade for the first 8 lessons in a group class or the first 10 in private coaching, on a membership of 8 weeks or longer (on a 4-week membership, the loan covers those 4 weeks).
Parents are welcome
If you are bringing a child, you are welcome to watch the whole evening from the side of the piste. Our kids fencing classes page explains how classes work once your child has joined, and adult fencing classes covers the adult groups.
After the trial
The coach suggests which class suits you, and you decide whether to join. There is no obligation.
If you join on a membership of 8 weeks or longer within 7 days of your trial, your first Open Salle session is on us, and you can use our loan gear for it. Open Salle is our open sparring session. You get one Open Salle coupon, worth S$55, with no cash value, once per person. After that session, Open Salle sparring needs your own full kit.
Trial terms
- The trial costs S$55, paid before your session. It is for people who have not trained at Fencing Masters before. Returning members don't qualify.
- You can move your trial once, free of charge, if you tell us at least 24 hours before it starts. If you miss it without moving it, the fee is not refunded. Staff may allow a late reschedule (under 24 hours) at their discretion, for example for illness.
- Children under 7 can have a trial on request. The coach decides whether it is one-to-one.
- Join within 7 days. If you pay for a membership of 8 weeks or longer by 23:59 (Singapore time) on the 7th day after your trial, your first Open Salle session is on us, and you can use our loan gear for it. You get one Open Salle coupon per person. It is valid for 8 weeks from your first day of training and applies to a membership at our Ubi salle. It has no cash value and cannot be exchanged, transferred or used towards fees. 4-week memberships do not include it.
- The coupon's 8 weeks run from your first day of training. A pause does not extend them.
- If your membership ends before you use the coupon, the coupon lapses. A coupon you have already used is not charged back.
- Open Salle has a limited number of places for coupon holders each session. If they are full, your coupon stays valid for another session before it expires.
- Loan gear. We lend beginners the mask, jacket and blade for the first 8 lessons in a group class or the first 10 in private coaching, on a membership of 8 weeks or longer (on a 4-week membership, the loan covers those 4 weeks). After the loan you will need your own kit to keep training.
- If you start on a 4-week membership and commit to 8 weeks or longer before those 4 weeks end, you get the rest of the full beginner loan. The joining coupon still needs a membership of 8 weeks or longer, paid within 7 days of your trial.
- After your coupon session, Open Salle sparring needs your own full kit.
- These terms, prices and promotions may change at any time. Please enquire with us for the latest before you book. The terms confirmed with you when you pay are the ones that apply. Our website terms also apply.
