Adult Fencing Classes in Singapore

It is never too late to pick up a sword. Our adult fencing classes in Singapore combine a full body workout with a sport built on strategy, focus and split second decisions, all in a friendly, beginner-welcoming environment.

Why Adults Are Taking Up Fencing

More working adults in Singapore are turning to fencing for a form of exercise that challenges the mind as much as the body. A single session works your legs, core and reflexes while demanding total concentration, which makes it an effective way to switch off from work stress. Every attack, parry and feint is a small tactical decision made in a split second, so there is no room left to think about anything else.

Beyond fitness, many adults find the sport builds focus, discipline and confidence that carry over into everyday life. Read more about the benefits in our article on fencing for adults in Singapore.

Our Fencing for Fitness Programme

Fencing for Fitness is our adult programme, designed for complete beginners as well as adults returning to sport after a long break. Classes are structured to build footwork, balance and basic blade skills gradually, so you are never thrown in at the deep end. Whether you are 25 or 65, the programme is paced to suit your fitness level and experience.

  • Beginner-friendly progression, no prior experience required
  • Suitable for all fitness levels and age groups
  • Guidance from NROC-registered coaches
  • A supportive, non-intimidating environment for first-timers

What Your First Session Is Like

You do not need any equipment or experience to try your first class. All protective gear and weapons are provided, so you can turn up in comfortable sportswear and start learning straight away. Coaches will walk you through basic stance, footwork and safety before you pick up a blade. For a fuller walkthrough of what to expect, see our guide on what to expect at your first fencing lesson.

How the Coaching Is Structured

Coaching here isn't reinvented from one week to the next. Every fencer starts with Foundations, building the coordination, balance and agility the sport asks for, before moving into Fundamentals, where movement, blade control, judging distance and the manners of a bout all come together. Weapon work in foil, sabre or epee follows once those basics are solid. The stages are the same for everyone; what a coach does with them is not.

Those fundamentals stay the same whatever weapon you eventually settle on, so switching later costs you nothing you have already learned, and every coach draws on the same syllabus rather than making it up as the weeks go by, which is why there is always a reason behind what you are asked to drill.

Adults vary more than children do, in height and reach, in pace, in how much time the week allows, and in what they came for in the first place. The syllabus sets the order of what gets taught. What a coach asks of you is fitted to how you actually move and the style that suits you, not to a template.

What you want out of it matters just as much as what you can do. Wanting a good hour a week, a workout and something interesting to get better at, is a complete answer, and the coaching is paced for that. So is wanting to enter a veteran event and train properly for it. Tell a coach which, and how hard you are pushed follows from it, within what your time and the sport realistically allow.

Choosing Your Weapon

Fencing has three distinct weapons, foil, epee and sabre, each with its own rules, target areas and style of play. New adult fencers usually get a taste of the basics before deciding which weapon suits their style best. Explore the differences on our guide to the three weapons page.

Fencing Is a Sport for Life: Veterans Welcome

Fencing has no cut-off age, and it is one of the few sports with a full competitive pathway built for older adults. In veteran fencing, also called masters fencing, athletes compete from the age of 40, in age bands of 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 and over, so you are always matched against people at a comparable stage of life. Your category is set by the age you reach during the year of the competition, and that same age of 40 applies to men and women alike.

Many of our adult members train purely for fitness and never step onto a competition strip, and that is completely fine. If you want more, though, the veteran route is open, whether you are picking up a blade for the first time in your 40s or 50s or returning after years away. Our founder, Jeffrey Lopez, has been coaching since 1976, which tells you how long a life in this sport can really last. Read more in our guides to veteran and masters fencing and starting fencing in your 40s and 50s.

Adult fencing FAQ

No. We teach adults across a wide range of ages, and Fencing for Fitness is designed to welcome complete beginners no matter their age or background.

Not at all. The classes build your fitness gradually through footwork and drills, so you can join at whatever fitness level you are currently at and improve over time.

Yes, many adults join purely for the workout and mental challenge and never compete. Fencing for Fitness is built with that kind of student in mind, though competing is also an option if you want it later.

Yes. Veteran fencing, sometimes called masters fencing, has categories from age 40, split into bands of 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 and over, for both men and women. You can train just for fitness or work toward veteran competition, whichever suits you.

Comfortable sportswear and sneakers are enough for your first session. All protective gear and weapons are provided, so there is nothing you need to buy in advance.

This varies from person to person depending on how often you train, so it is best to enquire and we can talk through what a realistic pace looks like for you.

Our adult classes are structured so beginners progress at their own pace, and more experienced adults can also continue developing their skills, so enquire and we can advise on the right fit.
