What to Expect at Your First Fencing Lesson

Nervous about trying fencing? Here is exactly what happens at a first lesson in Singapore, from the gear to the footwork, so you can walk in relaxed.

Trying anything new for the first time comes with a flicker of nerves, and fencing looks more intimidating than most. Swords, masks, an unfamiliar sport with its own language. The reality of a first lesson is far friendlier than it appears. If you know what to expect, you can walk in relaxed and enjoy it. Here is how a first session usually goes.

You do not need anything

Let us clear the biggest worry first: you do not need experience, fitness or any equipment. For your first session we provide all the gear, the mask, jacket and blade. Wear comfortable sports clothes and covered shoes you can move in, and that is it. There is nothing to buy and nothing to prepare.

A warm welcome and the safety basics

Your coach will greet you, get a sense of your goals, and walk you through the essentials of staying safe. You will be shown how the gear goes on and why each piece matters. None of this takes long, and it is all designed to put you at ease before you pick up a blade.

Footwork comes before fighting

Here is the part that surprises people: your first lesson is not a duel. Fencing is built on footwork, so that is where you begin. You will learn:

  • The on-guard stance
  • How to advance and retreat
  • The basics of the lunge

It feels a little like a dance at first, and it is genuinely fun. Good footwork is the foundation everything else is built on, which is why even our advanced fencers keep drilling it.

Almost everyone walks in expecting a sword fight and walks out realising fencing is a thinking sport played with the feet as much as the hand.

Your first touches

Once you have the movement, you will get to try scoring a controlled touch, usually against a coach or a padded target. This is where the sport clicks for most people, and it is also usually the moment nervous beginners realise fencing does not hurt to get hit the way they imagined. You start to feel the timing and distance that make fencing what it is: a duel of decisions as much as blades. You may even get a feel for more than one weapon, since foil, sabre and epee each play differently. You can read about the differences on the three weapons page.

The atmosphere

A good salle is welcoming, not intimidating. You will be among other beginners and coaches who remember exactly what a first lesson feels like. Fencing has a strong culture of respect, so you will find people encouraging rather than showing off. Most first-timers are smiling by the end and a little surprised at how quickly they improved.

Why now, and why here

The hardest part of fencing is booking the first session; the sport itself is far more approachable than it looks. Fencing Masters has welcomed complete beginners since 1995 under founder Jeffrey Lopez, and our NROC-registered coaches are used to making a first lesson calm, safe and enjoyable, whatever your age. There is no better time to start than now, because everything you need is provided and nothing is expected of you in advance.
