Why Fencing, and Why Now
Fencing sharpens reflexes, focus and decision-making in a way few other sports do, while still building fitness and coordination. It suits a wide age range, from young children through to adults in their later years, which is part of why we see students at Ubi anywhere from about 3 to 90 years old. If you have been considering a new sport for yourself or your child, a class close to home in the east removes one of the biggest barriers, which is simply getting to training consistently.
Our coaches teach across all three weapons. If you are new to the sport, our page on the 3 weapons explains the differences between foil, sabre and epee and can help you decide where to start.
More Than a Sport
Fencing is a combat sport that keeps the formal code of a martial art. Every bout opens and closes with a salute to the opponent and the referee, and progression is ranked and earned rather than handed out. It builds the same bearing that a uniformed group like the National Cadet Corps or scouts aims for, but through a sport children actually want to attend. Once a fencer is on the piste, they are on their own. There is no teammate to carry the point and nobody else to blame, so they learn to claw back a deficit, hold a lead, lose in public, shake hands, and come back for the next bout. Read more on how fencing builds discipline and how fencing teaches resilience and handling defeat.
We treat this as part of coaching, not an extra. Raising a fencer this way takes more than one adult in the room, and at our Ubi studio that means coaches, parents and older fencers all playing a part.
